Everything started with…

Prince. For me everything started with Prince records. It’s the earliest memory I have of being really moved by something. The Batman soundtrack, for instance. Everything started with Prince.

People who meet you for the first time think…

That I’m going to be angry, and I’m generally not. All dark and I don’t know, but I’m not at all.

And instead you get angry when…

People don’t tell the truth. I get angry at two things, when people lie and when people bully other people. That makes me crazy. I can’t stand it.

With your new album Basic Volume, what do you want to spread in the world?

It’s OK to love each other. That not everything has to be about money.

How you would describe your music in three words…

Indescribable, indefinable, mystery.

Something you would love to change…

I wish it was hot all the time. That’d be great. If everywhere was sunny.

Noise versus silence

Yeah. Silence is important to me. Meditative. Space. I like space, I try to put space in my music. It’s not like cluttered, you know. Yeah it’s definitely important to me. If everythings silent you can think.

Dream versus reality

Both. I dream about reality. To be honest I think that everything you could possibly think of is already happening all at once, so to me there is not a boundary, you know. Not when you actually think about it.

How should reality look like for you?

How should reality look? That’s the deepest question I think I’ve ever heard. How should reality look … I’m not saying it’s a perfect world. If you ask me what do I want for the world to be that it isn’t now, just forever that it is. Forever and less subjugation of people and less bullying and less just awful shit, and more stuff that people get along and go towards a common goal I guess. I guess I want more hope and less hate.

On an ordinary Sunday…

On an ordinary Sunday I am probably on a plane. Because I travel a lot.

Would you love to calm down sometimes?

It’s just normal now. Would I like to calm down? Probably yes. I want more things I guess. I want the things that other people want I guess. That doesn’t necessarily include always being on aircraft. So yes I would like to go to the park, I would like to have a child, I would like all these things. All in good time I suppose.

So your perfect Sunday would be an afternoon in the park in the sun?

I don’t really look at the world like that, do you know what I mean? I don’t sort of think about what could be. I tend to think about what is, and if I want to change what is then I will change it. It’s the dream versus reality thing. They’re not different.

What comes next?

I’m doing an installation at Somerset House. I have a lot of other music that I’m looking to put out. I’m touring a bit. And then I’ll see what happens.

Some holidays are planned?

I want to go to the Caribean for a bit and to the Far East for a little while, to make music or anything. Music is kind of the only thing that I’ve ever been really far ahead of myself with, so I’ve got lots of records that are ready to go after this. I also feel like you need to go look at the world for a bit and see reality before you go and make something else.

And what’s about interesting coproductions?

Yeah I’ve done an entire mixtape with NAAFI, the Mexican DJ collective, which is really really good, and I’m really excited about that. Who knows what may be happen, people seem to like my records so we’ll see what happens after that.

Last but not least: Your question…

What’s my question? What are we going to do about all of this nonsense? … It just seems like the world is changing quickly and the direction it goes in our lifetime is up to us, and what are we going to do? Are we going to sit here and let all this awful stuff happen? Or are we going to do something about it?
